I count 22 drive gear teeth and 20 driven gear teeth. I cant find anywhere in the manual where it shows this as a propper set up. Is there an explanation for this?
Thanks for your help

Re: 454 alpha first gen gearing

There is a perfect explantion, you have a SBC gear ratio drive. The 454's were too much for the Alpha drive, and probably go tore up. The owner cheaped out and stuck a 1.50 gear ratio drive on it because he found a cheap one. Then got rid of the boat.
You need to get the proper gear set for a 1.32:1 gear ratio, reprop it, and keep a light hand on the throttle.

Re: 454 alpha first gen gearing

Thanks Don

I still a bit confused with the manual so I appreciate your patience with me.

The only 20...... 22 gear combination I see in the manual shows the drive gear at 20 and the driven at 22. I have the oppisite. My drive gear # 10 in the diagram has 22 teeth. My driven gear # 9 in the drawing has 20 teeth. I see no mention of 22 teeth at all for the drive gear. Is it possible there is a typo?

I realize I dont have the correct gearing in anycase, however my drive gear needs to be 20 so I was wondering if I need only to get a 16 tooth driven gear, assuming there is a typo. Or are they matched where you buy them as a set?

Better give a link to the drawing you are looking at.

The upper gears come as sets only, you can't just replace one or the other.

Re: 454 alpha first gen gearing

I stand embarrasingly corrected. Thanks for your clarification Don.

So I go to the marine parts store asking for 1.32:1 gears. Should I bring the u-joint assembly and the drivin gear assembly? Or should I pull the gears off and just take thoes. Is there anything I need to consider? In the reading I did it showes very important details on shimming. any idea on the costs of these gears are? Just a rough idea?

Thanks

All the special tools to do the job will cost about the same as the gears, and the job can not be done without the special tools.
The gear set alone is over 600 bucks. You will still need to replace bearings and a seal kit.

Yikes thats a lot of juce for a couple of gears. I have the tools presses and such. I might just hand this off to the marine place ta do. Shimming the gears would be new to me.

Thanks for you promped responces and setting me straite yet again.
