I bought a 1981 Wellcraft Nova with a 454 Chevy engine on Saturday. I tried hooking up earmuffs to the lower unit in order to winterize the engine. I ran the engine for 10 minutes and noticed a considerable amount of smoke coming from the engine. There was no water coming into the engine because the water supply from the lower unit that comes through the transum was cut and had a shut off valve attached to the end. I opened the valve and a poor stream of water was coming out. The way this cooling system is hooked up there is a stainless steel L pipe with an inch diameter that is screwed on to the back of the transum close to the v-line centre of the boat which sucks water to the oil cooler and to the rest of the engine. My question is due to the size of the engine, is this why this method of cooling was chosen? If I was to repair the lower unit could it there be a sufficient amount of water flow to cool this engine?<br />Thanks.
