454 mercruiser issues, help!!!

I have a 454 mercruiser magnum. Just boat the boat (24 foot baja 240 sport) and was out just my second time. Cruising at WOT at about 55 mph and then the MPH dropped to about 25 mph and felt like the boat was struggle. I let off the gas brought it down to idle and then it died. After about a ½ hour I get her started again. Put it in gear and stalls, do it again, again, again. Finally get it to stay in gear and go. If I would give it gas the motor would rev up but the boat would only go up to like 10 mph. The motor is making a clicking noise, that gets faster as I give it gas. I think I toasted the plugs. I reached down to feel a plug, while the motor was running and I was shocked so I am thinking the wires are toasted too. The only other thing I have done to the boat that may have caused this but I do not see how is put a system in the boat, 2 10 in woofers with a 500w amp and Four 6 in speakers with a 1200 w amp., radio and satellite radio.

Here is the best part. So I limp the boat home at 5 mph, takes about 2 hours to get home through memorial weekend boat traffic (sucks going through channels at 5 mph when everyone is doing 50 !!!). I have it a little over idle the entire way home, get to my canal, which is not too wide, so I have to drop it down to idle. It dies, start it up give it some gas, let off the gas, stalls, repeat this five or six times, now I am ¼ way down my canal. Does it again and then the starter breaks, just keeps spinning. So I am dead in the water. There was a small breeze blowing down my canal (my house is the last one on the canal) so I put up the engine hatch and the wind pushes us slowly down the canal to my house, was the best docking job I have done yet!!!.

So I know I need a new starter, regardless of if I need plugs/wires I am going to change them, along with the carburetor filter. What else could have cause this and what should I check?
Thanks

What was the engine temperature when this happened? I'm wondering if you overheated.

Have you checked the oil for water contamination?

It really could be the outdrive OR motor with the info given up to this point ?

Do all your guages work and do you have and alarm buzzer ? That would show any sign of a motor overheat or oil pressure problem ?

I would pull the sparkplugs and see how they look and go from there

tommays

I only have a temp gauge, psi, and volt meter and all looked fine. I did just have the lower unit oil changed, maybe they screwed up something. And I do not think I have a buzzer, at least I did not hear one!

Thanks

It Could be as Simple as a Clogged Fuel Filter,....Or it May have Started out to be that Simple,.........

It Sounds like you May have Toasted the Motor, More so than the Plugs,..by trying to Run it Home....

At This Point,..... A Major Tune-Up,+ Engine Diagnostic is Needed to See just How Much Damage you've Done,.......

It Sounds to Me, That it went Lean from a Clogged Filter,+ You subsequently Detonated the Motor,......
How Far is the Real Question........

Btw,.......
Cruising at WOT at about 55 mph
Cruising is 3/4 Throttle,........ Not WOT.........

I guess i have alot to learn, first boat!
i am going to change everything this weekend and see.

Any recommendations on what plugs and wires to use? Also the starter I think i stripped a gear or something. The starter sounds like it is spinning but nothing on the motor.

The boat feels like it is not running on all cylinders, feels like I have toasted a few plugs. I had similar symptons when i blew the motor in my Ford Lighting due to the plugs melting, but i did alot more damage on that run then on the boat.

Thanks for your advice

You Hope,..................

You Really need to find a Qualified Tech to Diagnose Just How Bad it Is...........

Re: 454 mercruiser issues, help!!!

Well the mechanic came by last night and since the starter does not turn the motor over ( i think i striped the gear because the starter motor still spins strong) he could not diagnose it. So he is changing the starter today. He said he was going to try and fix the old one but i just told him to put a new one in (don't want to chance it). Figure if the starter can be repaired I will just keep it as a spare.
Once he get's it started then we will go from there. If there is not engine damage then I am going to have him change the plugs, wires, cap, fuel filter. I was going to do the plugs myself but getting under that exhaust manifold just looks like alot of bloody knuckles and cursing. So I will be riding my waverunner until this is figured out.
Thanks everyone for the input!!!
