I have a 454 mercruiser that has set up fo rabout 18 months. After its last use, it was winterized. I replaced all fluids, oil, drive lube, oils, etc...and batteries.

I tried to start it up, and all I get is a click. Sounds like the starting silenoid clicking, but not sure. My friend is telling em to remove the spark plugs, as to there could be liquid buildup inside piston cylinders which is uncompressable, therefor not allowing the motor to turn over. So Im gonna try that next, and also check the starter, is there any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help, Paul

Also engine oil smelled like gas? This is odd, but a friend told me it was kinda normall for Mercruiser High Performance engines? What are your thoughts on this?

No, it's not normal. Does your engine have a block mounted mechanical fuel pump? IF so, I would bet the fuel pump is bad.

yeah it does have a block mounted mechanical fuel pump. How would I check it to see if bad?

Also, is it a smart thing to remove spark plugs and try to turn over if ignition/neutral/starter all check out?

And did you tighten the battery wing nuts with pliers? Hand tight is not enough. 'nutcase
