So, I thought as long as it's cold and miserable out, I would start tearing down the lower end of my '76. Should be simple, drop the 4 bottom bolts out and presto...NOT!

Ok, pull the prop and shaft out THEN the leg will drop.....Wrong again! Shaft, bearing and pillowblock won'tcome off. AAHHH!!! What if I remove the screw pin from in front....Still nothing!

Here it is, pulled bolts out and leg dropped 2 inches and thats it. Is there something I'm missing????
Been to broke/lazy to get a repair manual. Can someone give me the heads-up on what I should be doing?

If you have the the old gearhouse, take the middlegcovers off---- six schrews and behinde that you have the shiftlinkagecouple. Two nuts, one long and one short. One is left and theother is right.
If you have the new gearhouse ( if it is a 76 ---yes then have the new one). There is a cotterpin that connect the shiftrod lower to the shiftrod intermidiate. When you have disconnect the four screw holding the gearhouse to the middleg, you drop the gearhouse about 1 inch and then you can disconnect the cotterpin att the shiftlinkage.

Re: 45hp lower end removal

My 1970 35 HP Chrysler is the same as some Chrysler?s 35HP - 55 HP. I usually remove the cotter pin vs re-adjusting the linkage (attached). Plus, I use a longer bolt to hold the space open at the widest point to work in, if needed. You can see I have made some ref. point for re-adjusting the linkage if needed.

Inserting attachments (using advance) is a new experience with this New Look!

Good Luck! jow

Re: 45hp lower end removal

You guys are AWESOME! Thanks!! I got the lower unit off and pulled the pump.....what a mess! Pieces of impeller everywhere.
Went to Seloconline lastnight to find a parts breakdown complete with part#'s but getting that list is like looking for the perverbial needle.
Any idea's on where I can this list? Sierra doesn't have much in regards to this year of lower end units.

I found my Sierra impeller here at iBoat at a bargain price since they price match and will use the low US Postal rate. My computer and I are having a slow learning curve with the attachments. LOL! jow

That Is the wrong configuration for mine in kit form. They do say that my motor requires a 10 blade like you have there yet the original was a 6. Looks like your original was a 10. The reason for the kit is I want to replace all the seals but can't nail anything down.

The kit I saw is an 18-3214 and the face plate is a match and impeller is a 6. This kit is designed for 90-3cyl. and 120-4cyl.though. I have no way of finding the dimensions to get an exact match.

Try to look at mastertech.com, mercruiserparts.com or mail Franz at Franzmarine (franzmarine.com).
You have partslist at ishopmarine.com or mercrusierparts.com. Choose Mercury-store then Chrysler at ishop and Mercury,Force,Mariner & other outboards at mercrusierparts.

outdoorsman;

If you are still having a problem, there are parts lists available which you should have for your engine anyway. Please provide your engine model and serial number from the plate in the front of the lower cowling.

Re: 45hp lower end removal

Thanks Nordin. Ishop and mercruiser have most of what I'm looking for yet some key components are n/a. Mastertech.com came up as a computer site but I did have mastertech bookmarked. It's maxrules.com

Carholme, I have the motor at work in the shop. I used to have the s/n written down somewhere but I'll be damned if I know where I put it. Model is 459BF.

Absolutely awesome, Gerry! Thanks!! With all these different sites, I can get all the parts for a complete rebuild if I needed to. Might even get some spares :D

Thanks again, guys!!!

Glad it worked for you. Enjoy your engine, there is not much you cannot do with it.

Re: 45hp lower end removal

So I did some shopping for a price/parts comparison. Crowley scored very well, having everything I needed, not a bad price with decent shipping$; Ishop's list was mostly N/A; Mercruiserparts.com did well with only the impeller being N/A; Boats.net was excellent with everything I needed and a great price, but then the bottom fell out for them when I discovered Mercury has a policy that their brand of parts are not to be shipped out of the USA from boats.net!FAIL
Crowley gets my business!

Send some Pics of the Monster when you get a chance. I like to see and use pics as references, records and verification of my work. I have detected and corrected some errors from studying Pics when I had questions. Jow

Re: 45hp lower end removal

Thanks for that Pic. I can see differences in your 45HP and my 35HP legs. I guess or wonder (LOL) if they are not the ones compatible as some 35 ? 55HP Chryslers are. Did you have the option to pull the cotter pin vs disconnecting the shift linkage? Plus, did I miss the option to get a full view of your pic vs scrolling? jow

That was a leg pic for comparison. I could have pulled the cotter pin but opted for the linkage because there was more room to work.

In my haste, I neglected to watch for the ball/shaft key when I pulled the prop shaft.
I couldn't remember where I had seen a ball that size until I picked a 1/4" ratchet out of my tool box....DING!!!!!! Bought a 3/8-1/4 socket adapter and cut the top off and voila! 1 shaft key:D

Once the guts were out of the gear case all that was left was a race. Had no puller in the shop that would fit so I made one and it came out nicely.
