Actually when i adjusted the high and low settings, changes to performance did happen. Coughing persisted. I pulled the plugs initially to check them out and called napa for a price on new ones, and they said they stopped being made 20 years ago. So i figured, i should replace due to age only. I wanted to adjust settings before i switched to see if that was the problem. I am going to replace the new plugs with the 20+ old plugs and see if i can get the coughing to stop and run like it did. If its not broke dont fix it, I know, it was just the age of the plugs which prompted me to do it.

I just wanted everyone to know i took out the new plugs and put in the old ones 25 years plus in age and the motor ran perfect last time out. No coughing, not even once. The motor did not like those autolite 303 plugs that were given to me as the replacement plug.

Autolite plugs are made for catfishing weights only.

I only use Champions in my motors. NGK's are okay, now that they woke up and shortened up the thread shank, to match the J6C's. When NGK thought they could make a plug for old 57 Johny/Rude, the thread shanks were too long and the pistons slammed the gap shut, but the engineering department figured they better fix that.

I have a couple of those old TD-20's to tinker with too. One was stuck, but I fixed that. So, now I may be able to have two runable motors. They sure sold a lot of these old buggers. A TD-20 just wouldn't be a TD-20, unless it has several dents in the gas tank. These engines were pretty much based on the old LT-39 design. Amazingly light and powerful little motors. The little 2.5hp is also a cool little motor.
