460 omc cobra info thanks

HELLO ,and thanks in advance.

Hears the story, I have a 1987 23 Gulfstreem Grady with wit the OMC 460, don’t feel bad I like the boat even with the OMC Ford. Picked up the boat last march from Ohio ,It was laid up for a few years. I resealed the drive, rebuilt the carburetor and changed the bellows, points, plugs ,cap ,rotor etc and a lot of tlc . It a great boat . I have also searched as much as possible on the forums and have learned a lot about the bb fords. I always have had mercrusers and outboards ,

Hear are the issues, the carburetor seems to run a bit rich ,and can be flooded easily if you pump it to much .I know “don’t pump it“ . My dad seems to like to pump it and then its flooded You .need to just turn the key and it will start , are Holleys prone to flood ?, My Rochester on my 454 bb mag never flooded that easily. The auto choke is set on O I know its running a bit rich the plugs show it .Could it be a choke adjustment., the motor tops out a 4100rpm; a little short .
I had old fuel to burn ,150 gal of it, so I set the timing for 87, it ran good .The timing marks hard to see even with a good cleaning and chalk on it .I would like to put a new harmonic balancer on it so I can read the numbers easily. It would it have to be a marine item or a after market one be good ?I want to get it right on the money. Also what electronic distributor would be best ?And yes I know I would have make the shift interrupter go with it .

Another issues when I pulled the drive off today ,it takes a bit of tugging ,unlike a merc there was a little bit of water in {see photo } not much .The two (2) things I think I did wrong I “ I did not have the OMC book at that time I have it now no gasket sealing compound on the out side of the out drive drive gasket facing the outdrive and no gasket sealing compound on the front of the joint bellow where it attaches to the pivot housing . Any way ,can water come in any other way I would think if it leaked it should keep on leaking .

One more question will the lower unit from a 1990 300 hp v8 work on the lower of my cobra I have a rebuilt one , I know I would have to take it a part and change the drive shaft , shift rod, water passage, etc it looks to be the same I know a spare would be good to have around .

Thank You Jd

Any vib damper for a 460 should work. But it needs to be one that is designed for "External" balancing unless someone replaced that engine with one that has internal balancing.....OMC used external.

I disconnected my auto choke. I don't think it's really needed in a temperate climate. I didn't need it. 1 or 2 pumps when cold always worked.

There's nothing wrong with the OEM dist....but an MSD billet would be nice or at least a Pertronix unit in the OEM dist....But If you do that you have to use a simple circuit that will allow the ESD to still work or you won't be able to get it out of gear.

I had the same RPM problem (among others!!) I have more than 2 flat lobes on the cam. This will absolutely cause a low WOT rpm. (I used to get 5100 and 4200 was max before I pulled it apart)

There's "nothing" wrong with the 460. (except new manifolds, couplers and *some* outdrive parts are scarce/unavailble..........I guess that's not really "Nothing"!!! )

I sent you a PM on other details......

Regards,

Rick

Thanks for the response , the motor has 500 hours on it, so may be I can get the points and timing right . I did get it to 4300, but then played with it and had enough. It ran good so I left it alone. It is a heavy boat and I ran it with a 14 ¼ x 19 ss prop, How much would the snap on timing light help ? the marks are on the ballancer Sounds good if it would work ..

Also how would a small amount of water get in side the bellows any ideas ?
Thanks JD

There's a really good chance your drive shaft bellows has a rip or tear in it. Looks like it and the gimbal bearing needs to be replaced.
