1983 470 merc cruiser i just completed conversion every thing went well just one question when i started up motor i looked at the volts gauge it said 14 volts being pushed out. i cut the two yellow wires from the stator to the old voltage regulator, would the gauge show 14 volts from old voltage regulator or the new alternator when you cut the yellow wires is that it no more power no more and the 14 volts is from new alternator. SORRY for questions i'm very new to I/O and i want to do it right.

Mine reads about 14 volts too. If you cut the two Y/R wires from the stator, you should be getting nothing from the old system. You should have removed the orange wire from the regulator to the starter, and removed the red/purple wire (careful that one could be hot remove completely or tape well). Make sure you tape the ends of the Y/R wires really well cuz they will still be hot (when running) until you remove the stator, I think. When I did mine I removed the harmonic balancer and took the stator completely out and removed all of the wires from the regulator, left it in place.

...you should have removed/dead-ended/taped the stator wires (yellow/red) and the output wire (orange). You may, or may not have, done the same with the sensing lead (red/purple).
With that said, you have put the old stator and water-cooled regulator out of its misery.
The new alternator out-put wire should have been routed to the battery supply terminal of the starter solenoid. This is (indirectly) where your voltmeter is now sensing the available voltage. Note that with the switch in the run position and the engine off, the voltmeter will read just over 12vdc (fully charged battery). Once the engine is started, the voltmeter will remain in the 12vdc range until the alternator 'self-excites' at around 1000rpm+/-. The voltmeter will then continue to register alternator output, regardless of engine speed until the engine is once again stopped.

EDIT: Terry types faster and I do !!!!!

Too bad you cut the stator wires. The stator was probably not causing issuses they tend to be from the voltage regulator. I also removed mine took a nice photo of it and sold it on ebay. Could have turned it into cash to help the 470 fund ;).

Here is a quick little diagram of a 3-wire alternator for reference:
