470 flapper question

We are trying to replace the flapper in the downpipe of a 1980 470 but the flappers don't seem to fit. (see picture) there are two long spring tabs on the side of the down tube that seems to get in the way. Are these supposed to hold something in. Do I have the right flappers? I can't see how this would fit.

I suspect you have the wrong shutter. Here is the parts diagram for a 1980 470: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...62&bnbr=17&bdesc=EXHAUST+ELBOW+ASSEMBLY+(MCM) Looks like you have the newer style of shutter shown here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show.../46.png&inbr=908&bnbr=230&bdesc=EXHAUST+ELBOW and it does not fit. Looks like the springs hold the shutter in place. The shutters have different part numbers. Good luck.
