470 graphite exhaust gasket w/ perfect seal?

Quick question. I decided to reinstall my cylinder head with OEM intake and exhaust gaskets. I see that the exhaust gasket is graphite, just like the one in between the manifold and the riser.

The last exhaust gasket was a fiber/cardboard aftermarket type, so I used the perfect seal on both sides. However, I'm not sure I should use it on the graphite one. I would guess not, even though the mating surface on my exhaust manifold (aluminum) is a little pitted.

Any opinions?

Thanks.

No sealer on those gaskets. They go on dry.
There is even a service bulletin out when those gaskets came out saying the go on dry.

Thanks. That's what I did. I'll be firing up the engine tomorrow:)

Ok. I just tried to install the paper gaskets dry and I have water leaking all over the place. I'm sure that it's because I didn't get the mating surfaces clean enough... but how do you get the old gasket off without damaging the mating surfaces. (I worked on it with a razor blade for about an hour). And should I use perfect seal when I put it back together. I also had a paper gasket on the intake / exhaust manifold. I didn't use perfect seal on it either. Should have I?

Hi. I'm sure you'll be admonished to start a new thread, but...

I apply spray gasket remover to soften the old gasket. It is a product similar to paint stripper. It takes several or many applications. I also bought a gasket scraper, which is like a wide blade flat head screw driver. Once I get the material off, I scrub it with steel and gasket remover to get it nice and shiny. I do the final cleaning with lacquer thinner or acetone to remove all residues.

I don't worry about cosmetic, superficial scratches/rub marks the scraper leaves, but I definitely don't want to plow through the soft aluminum either. If you hold the scraper at the correct angle, you wont' do any damage.

I use Permatex liquid aviation gasket material on both sides of paper gaskets. It is practically equivalent to Perfect Seal. I think the manual calls for this, too. Yes, in fact, on page 3A-10 top left. Have you down loaded this manual?

And as this thread states, the graphite/tin gaskets go on dry.
