470 Merc. Good? Bad? Ugly?

Cracked exhaust manifold (upgraded to aluminum - $$$)
Blown head gasket (I never even overheated this sucker!)
Fuel pump
Upgraded to a regular marine alternator
Water pump seals
Carb rebuild
Worn out distributor shaft
etc
etc
etc

There are way too many 3.0, 4.3 and 5.0 powered boats out there right now to consider one with a 21+ year old 470 in it.

Hate to be picky, but aside from the head gasket waterpump and the alternator (that's enough I guess) ANY 20+ year old motor can have those problems. Can't argue with the rest of it though, and I kind of LIKE my 470.

Most of the issues I've had with my 23 year old 470 have more to do with it being 23 years old than being a 470 IMO. These engines are far from ideal, though, and not for the mechanically declined. But I, like STONY, kinda like my red-headed step-child. Pushes my boat around pretty good for a four banger, and is good on fuel. Kind of a love-hate deal.

So tell the owner to pull the 470 offer him 1/2 the cost of what he was asking. Pick up an olsmobile engine with a 5 bolt main ( I think they are a 454 ) put all the marine stuff on it $$$$$$ and go. The boys around here put them in their big Jet boats with teflon bottoms and go sliding over logs and gravel bars on the river back channels . They love those engines .

Man Im new on this site and just picked up a 91 thompson bow rider in good shape and trailer for about 500. I started it and ran for a few min. on the muffs and it sounded good and tied foward and reverse to. So I guess Ill be finding out to see if I have a good one or not..

Several months ago I posted my thoughts on the 470's and it was deleted. I just tell it like it is. The Army didnt work out for me either.
