....helping a friend with his '85 470 coupled to an alfa One.
NO thermostat installed as found. Corrected over-heating problems (defective riser full of rust flakes and destroyed flapper blocking exhaust). My manual #3 shows the thermostat's element fitting into the underside of the cast iron manifold, yet Mercury Schematics shows the element fitting into the hose connection ( http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/M...XHAUST MANIFOLD-EXHAUST ELBOW (CAST IRON).pdf ).
To my way of thinking, the element side of the thermostat should face the warming side of the coolant as in the #3 maual. The schematic shows the element facing the cooled water from the heat exchanger.
All comments and suggestions greatly welcomed.
