470 timing advance direction ?

Hi all, had an issue on the water with hard starting in neutral and wanted to check timing.

I had no light but rotated the distributor anticlockwise about 5 degrees and she is more responsive and idles better.

Is anti clockwise rotation of the dizzy advance or retard please ?

Does winding the idle screws out richen the mix or lean it ?

Get a timing light...... before you destroy your engine.

Mixture screws- out richer, in leaner.

Thanks Don. Plugs now look sooty so on to that.

I was under the impression one could time these by ear but am unsure if I have advanced or retarded the timing so wanted to know.

I have a timing light and dwell meter in one so will do it with those soon but just for info really

Not if you don't know EXACTLY what you are doing, and then it's iffy. Burn some holes in your piston and see.

The distributor (rotor) rotates in a clockwise direction, so by rotating ANTICLOCKWISE you ADVANCED the timing. Yeah as Don says a timing light is a necessity and a dwell meter if you still have points.
