48spl drive shaft ?

I have a 1996 johnson 48 spl long shaft. I have to get a new gear case for it, but dont know if it takes a large driveshaft or small. I have located a small shaft LU but am not sure if it will fit.

My other question is how hard is to change a short shaft LU to long shaft??? I have found a couple shortshaft LU but only one LS..
