Ive just got a short shaft 1986 evinrude outboard. But there is no water coming from the engine as in a pee stream like I have seen on most other outboards. Should there be a stream of water coming out, or does it have a blockage somewhere, although I have had a good look I cant see anywhere for the pee stream to come out from. If it has no pee stream coming out how is the engine cooled???

It is cooled just like any other outboard. Water circulates through the powerhead and discharges out the exhaust. The pee thing is only a tiny fraction of the total water. An intentional "leak" if you will.

I don't know if your motor has one or not. If not, the indicator is water spraying out the exhaust relief holes about half way down the shaft. Probably 95% of motors were satisifed with that system, till now everybody thinks they need a pee stream.

if you really want a pee stream and it wasn't included as part of your engine you can always add a pee stream. Directions for adding a pee stream area available, I believe i have seen them either here or on the machinists page.... it is on the machinists page... about 2/3s of the way down this article http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson 9.9_15.htm.
please note ahead of time this is describing how to do it to a 9.9 or 15, you will be able to do the same basic thing, BUT will likely have to find a spot that works for your engine rather than just trusting that the spot recommended for the 9.9 15s is safe for yours.
I do wholeheartedly agree with the MACHINIST in that it would be better to do towards the top for the reasons that he stated.
hope this helps.

Ugly, and entirely unnecessary. Besides, wouldn't you have to pull the powerhead to do that?

hi.
i know that it looks not so nice , but here is lower cowling missing i think.
but if there is lower cowling and if you spend some more time to do this in right way it will be fine.
i found this picture somewhere in net pages so i isnt my job.
But my friend runing 4hp model from mid 80', during fishing in bushes, one leaf just glued in water intake screan, so water pump was sucking water but also sucking the leaf and in this case water pund didnt get any water.
he didnt notice that water mist of exhoust just dissapear, at the end he just smel burning paint, almost burning the engin

Which brings up another point. No matter what type of telltale or indicator you have, it won't do any good unless you are looking at it. Maybe some are paranoid enough to keep an eye on it, but most don't. Me, I may go all day and never look.

The original motor in question has a lower cowl (I think---the guy is in UK.)

On the 4 HP Johnson models you dont need to expect a pee stream of water. I have on and all you should expect is a sprinkle of water. Sort of like a light light rain shower. that is all that is needed , I have had mine since 1972, If you are still concerned put a thermometer on it after is has ran 70% throttle for 5 min. It should be around 165 degrees. If more than 20 degrees hotter. You need to replace the impeller in the water pump

I have an 89 4hp Johnson and I too report that it does not create a pee stream per se. Instead it is more like a warm mist. A simple test is to touch the head and if it is too hot to touch there is something wrong with the cooling system that bears looking into. Otherwise you are good to go.
