Re: 4hp powerhead rebuild

I have that exact motor on my 14' jon boat. I had a similar problem with mine. My needle and seat was shot. I replaced the needle and seat and float and she runs like a champ now. Your problem is in the carb.

Suzuki 40

Are the plugs clean? how is your power pack? There is really nothing to this motor. Buy a carb kit for it. Its less than $15.00 stop beating your brains in over this.

Suzuki40

BY THE WAY you should be using tc-w30 and not 10w-30 older two strokes used 10w30 but the new tcw30 works great. GO out and buy some penziol synthetic mix tcw30 and mix 50-1. then try it!

Re: 4hp powerhead rebuild

I have rebuilt the carb already. The plugs are new. The power packs are working. I was shocked quiet nicely by both. ;)

I am using TCW3 in the gas. I ust used 10W30 to squirt oil in the cylinder to see if the compression would come up. It went from 95 psi to 145 psi. One heck of a jump.

suzuki40,

Could you check your compression on your 4 hp and let me know what it is? PLEASE!!!

Could it be getting more air then it needs? maybe the throttle plate is offset?
just a thought

Ranger,

As mentioned. ONLY use TCW-3 rated outboard oil. Automotive oil will coke up your rings.

Use a decarb product meant for outboards.

Re: 4hp powerhead rebuild

I filled the cylinders with GM Cleens and let it soak for a few hours. I put TCW3 into the cylinder and pulled it through. I put the plugs back in and it fired up.

It still ran like a dog, bogging on acceleration and trying to get upper rpms. I kept trying and the rpms finally cam up. I reved it up several times like a chainsaw and it seem to clean itself out. Its better that before. I'm going to mix some new gas and make sure it is 50:1. Right now its more like 25:1 because it seemed to like running a rich mixture.

If the cylinders are glazed, the rings are not/were not seated correctly. Not broken in correctly, motor running too cold,etc... There's nuthing you can do except rebuid it ,hone the glazing off and install new rings. The top area of the cylinders, the part you can see, is the secondary compression. You've already proved that you have weak/worn rings by putting oil in the cylinders and improving the compression. But what you can't see is the cylinder below the ports, primary compression. This is what moves the fuel from the crankcase over to the cylinders!. I suspect you could rebuild the carb all day long, and not improve what's inherrantly wrong! If you've done everything else, it's a ring job needed!

I'm buying a hone today.

Since the psiton is just over 1.5" and my ring compressor is 2 1/8", what can I do to make up a ring compressor for this little engine?
