5.0 GXi fuel problem

The engine runs fine when primed with gas, but as soon as that's used up, it stalls and a no-start condition ensues.
I'm assuming it's the fuel pump assembly, but could use some help. Aside from checking for blockages are there other possible causes or things to consider first?
Thank you!

I believe this a MPI engine and thus subject to the VP fuel cells had internal paint that breaks down with ethanol gas. The resulting chips / goo can easily plug up the pressure regulator and / or the injectors. This issue is typically associated with a fuel pump whine as well as the pump running hot. Or it could be just a failing pump unable to deliver the needed gas under pressure for the injectors. Thus, the trouble shooting starts with checking the pressure as Scott is recommending. If this is something you need help with, please check out this video (link) and / or keep asking questions. Once pressure is known, please post and we’ll go from there. This issue is 100% solvable and the good folks here will help you get back on the water.

What are VP fuel cells? And are you saying there's paint internally within the fuel delivery system?

Which GXI is it, serial number maybe?

The engine runs fine when primed with gas, but as soon as that's used up, it stalls and a no-start condition ensues.
So key turns ON, pump runs and can start. It runs briefly and then if try to restart (key off than back on) it doesn't reprime?

We filled a new fuel filter with gas before installing. That's what I meant by primed.

Do you hear the fuel pump run when key is first turned to ON?

Not technically a fuel cell but it is an assembly of a low and high pressure pump, hence referred to as a cell sometimes.

Yes, these pumps came with internal paint that would flake off over time and cause havoc. This thread (link) is a collection of good info on this and what to do about it (not saying that is your issue).

Thank you very much. I'm now beginning to understand.

You’re welcome. But the key to getting this solved is to answer the questions fm Scott and All Dodge. Do not be shy about asking questions, it the only way folks can help but in return you need to answer theirs. Troubleshooting is a logical step by step approach and without data / info, the next steps cannot be taken. Afterall we are not there and thus you need to be the eyes, ears and hands. :)

If the pump is sucking your gas from the separator/filter and running for a brief time then it may not be the pump itself but in the fuel delivery system to the pump. Try running the boat on a separate gas supply from the boat tank and see if it will run longer. Basically hook the pump inlet up to a one gallon gas can and see what happens.
