5.0 mercruiser efi stalling

A friend of mine(truly a friend of mine, I can't afford a 2000 sea ray) has a 2000 sea ray with a 5.0 mercruiser efi. While boating on the river at cruising speed, he abruptly pulled the throttle back to idle, and maybe into reverse to avoid hitting a log. Now the boat will stall whenever you move the throttle to idle swiftly from about any setting. Any thoughts?

You will need to give more info about the motor AND drive the serial # of both would be best to get the help you need in soveing your problem
