So got my 1995 OCM 502APHUE back together and was testing it over the weekend.
If I put the fuel from a canister directly into carburetor it will start and run for a bit while the fuel is used up. And it will keep on starting and running for a bit if I keep on adding the fuel into the carb, but it will not keep on running.
To me feels like some issues with the fuel supply. Prior to the engine rebuild the mechanical fuel pump and carburetor were working ok and I've not made any changes to them at all.
It is possible to install the pump incorrectly somehow onto the engine, the install seemed pretty direct and can't really mess it up, all I did was unbolt from the old block and bolt to the new one.
After the pump all the lines are metal and can't see if any of the fuel is getting to the carb or not, what is the best way to test it?
Can I add some adapter just before the carb for fuel pressure test? or some other way to see if any of the fuel is getting into or passed the pump?

Is there a fuel drain on the carb I can check, to see if the fuel bowl is getting the fuel into it?

Thanks

Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and stick it in plastic soda bottle - You may need to use a piece of hose since the line is metal.. You will know in seconds if the pump is working when the motor or engine is cranked. It also may take some time for the hose/line from the tank through the pump to the carb to fill.

Was the fuel pump push rod installed in the block? And yes you can screw up installation. The push rod must be aligned with the lever on the pump.

The pump has a build in rod that goes inside the engine and the engine block inside has some offset wheel that looks like would act on the rod pushing it up every revolution. I did not detach the rod from the pump, just unbolt and bolt one the pump itself. Did not really see a way to align anything.
How can I get it wrong, perhaps I missed something?

Ayuh,.... Is this a Ford 5.0l, or a Chevy 5.0l,..??

Yer Assumin' the tank is givin' up it's fuel,.... Never Assume anything with a boat,....

Hook up a can of clean fresh fuel to the fuel filter that's mounted just ahead of the fuel pump, 'n try it, or try testin' like GA says,...

So did some more testing on the issue over the weekend.
Turned out the timing was way off and now with it adjusted the engine would idle way better, but still high.
Now that I'm getting fuel and spark and all, will take it to a pro mechanic to have looked over for the final tune.
So looks like before it would only running rich.
Glad sorted this problem out.

Also had a tough time getting a water pump gasket but finally found one from 1969 mustang 302 at a local auto parts store and it was a perfect fit, much better without water leaks :)
