My 1999 5.0 is toast (cracked block), so I'm thinking about going to a 5.7 for replacement. Here are my questions:
1) Can I go short block? Are heads, intake, carb, etc. the same?
2) Is the timing curve the same? Can I use my current Thunderbolt ignition or is the 5.7 different than the 5.0?
3) Is the gear ratio in the Alpha the same for both engines?
4) Any other differences I should know about?
If I can make the change for the same amount of money or a few hundred dollars more, I would rather go with the 5.7. I have new heads and complete exhaust for the 5.0 and I would like to use these parts if I can, but if not then I may just buy the long block and try to sell them later. Thanks in advance for the help!!
