Well, you could paint the whole engine gray.....then you could pretend it's still the 460 you pulled out!!!;)

All I am saying is that if you shoot it one last time before putting the rubber on you will cover all the bolts and other little areas that are missing paint and give it more of a factory new look.

Well with the exception of the distributor I have all of the wiring redone. I wish this carburetor wasn't needing a rebuild, I am dying to see how it runs.

Anyone have any advise on how to wire a remote starter switch. Pictures or a diagram would be nice.

Engine is completed and sitting on blocks. I still have to attach the backplate to the flywheel cover and install the distributor but otherwise it is ready. Here it is on the blocks. I have a utility trailer that I will hoist it up into for when I am ready to start and test it. Just makes moving it around a lot easier until it is ready for the boat. I picked up the NGK spark plugs today but its not time to install them yet.

Ok, I primed the oil pump today. I didn't know how long to run the drill so I just did it for 10 minutes or so and figured the was long enough. Afterward I installed the distributor and connected the wires. Next just for the heck of it I plan on doing a compression test just so that I know what my baseline numbers are. I also picked up a remote starter switch. I'm almost there. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Yeah, excellent thread wil. The only comment I have is that you should really have that intake manifold covered at all times, even the top of the carb when you put it on if you don't have the spark arrestor attached. I saw the pics a couple of pages back with the single white towel over it. I was always taught to put two rags in each hole, that way if you have dropped something into the top one and you didn't see it, it will fall into the second lower rag when you remove the top one . . . So you stuff them in one at a time, and remove the top one first making sure the second one is there to catch anything that falls in during removal of the top one. Boy that's hard to write clearly . . . Maybe I should try a third time

Those open manifold bores concerned me too. Dropping something in there can ruin your whole day.

I always put a couple layers of masking tape over them, with a rag under.

I was taught the two rag technique by diesel techs. Holes were bigger . . . I was going to say duct tape, but then I was thinking you'd have a cleaning job after that could result in crap in there too and recalled the two rag thing . . . Is rag + tape the Ford way DJ?

Thanks for the heads up guys, when I read this I jumped up and ran to the garage to be sure that I had placed the rags back over the openings. I had but it was a relief to be certain.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

.........Cliffsqjet.com sells the best kits and he will talk to you forever to get the carb right. You can send it to him as well he is the best!!!

I could do it for you but you would have to ship it to me and then back so you might as well send it to him. I have done many of these carbs and only wish you were closer as I would help you become a believer in these.

I contacted Cliffsqjet.com and this is the response that I received back from them...........

We rebuild quite a few Marine units, and also sell HP kits for them. The ethanol and additive content in modern fuels is causing a lot of the old Marine units to give troubles. There isn't a day goes by I don't get a call or email about one.

We have stepped up with modern materials to combat the problems associated with currently available fuels. Simply put, NOTHING rubber will live if placed in service. We use nitrile tipped needle assemblies, and florostemer accl pump cups, with hard plastic pump assemblies, with improved springs on both ends for superior fuel delivery. Our accl pump also has a "garter spring" under the pump seal, to keep it in constant contact with the pump bore, unlike the weak/factory design.

The bad news is that we are currently at least 5-6 months backlogged, and not making much headway at getting caught up. At least 30 percent of our business is correcting issues with fresh or recently "rebuilt" carburetors. This comes directly from NOT using good parts, and not recalibrating for the loss in BTU or less energy content of modern fuels.

If you don't mind the wait, we be glad to completely/correctly build the carburetor for you. If you want to tackle the job yourself, we sell complete HP kits for Marine carburetors, $79.95 plus shipping.

Thanks,

Cliff

If my brother in law is unable to tackle the job you might just be getting an email from me.

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

I would order the kit from Cliffs then. It will come with all the good stuff. It will also come with a set of idle tubes. No kits come with these and if you screw up taking them out you can't reuse them. Most rebuilders never remove the idle tubes and sediment gets into the idle wells and clogs these up. This is one of the most common reasons for a poor rebuild.

I can do the rebuild so if you get stuck e-mail me.

Hey D,

You might check out Flyingfish carbs.
http://www.flyingfishcarburetors.com/

I have not had one done by them (anybody?).... but they have a pretty good warranty and are fast unless you want them to rebuild your carb and send it back.

They flow test and engine test them before they send them out...

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Well today is the big reveal. I just got back from Alabama with the rebuilt carburetor. My brother-in-law had no problem what-so-ever with it other than the fact that it soaked in solution for almost five hours before the gunk even started to dissolve off of it. Once he got it clean to his satisfaction he went to work on it. I got home from the 3 hour drive and attached it to the engine and once daylight hits I will drag her outside, hook up my water supply, and fire her up (I hope).

Good luck................looking forward to your pprogress.

Is that a flat tappet cam?
Are you going to do the break-in outside the boat?
Did you prime the oil pump?

Good luck.............. see you're an early bird also............

Re: 5.0 to 5.7 Rapido rebuilt engine swap

Well the very first attempt was a bust. Battery is completely dead. I charged it yesterday before I left for AL and when I got back it showed a full charge. When I attempted to crank the engine it was turning really slow. I put the charger back on the battery and it is reading that it is dead. I will try to recharge it again before going to O'rielly's and buying a new one.
