Hello out there...just have a few things to ask I have a 5 1/2hp Johnson engine and the Model number is: CD 12 and the seal number is 178093

1) Year of the motor?????

2) The pull cord part of the motor that attaches to the motor and when pulled grabs on to the fly wheel I am looking for a replacement for that mine is damaged.

3) It has the 3 prong 2 line gas line tank. The tank works fine but it leeks really bad out of the part that attaches to the motor and I have to remove the pressure every time so it does not leek. Way to fix that..???

4) When in storage there is a little leakage, looks like from bottom end. Witch seal should be replaced..??

If any one can help would be greatly appreciated and thanks a head of time.
   :p :D

1) 1955

2) Try looking on ebay, outboard salvage yards, and the AOMCI website

3) I'm guessing it needs an o-ring replaced

4) Depends on what's leaking. It could be leftover oil from unburnt fuel, if so it'll be black. If it's obvious that it's gear lube then check the seals on fill/drain screws. Next thing would be to check the prop shaft seal. Had any fishing line behind the prop previously?

Does that help any, eh? ;)

Thanks for the info.....just a few more questions.

2)The Aomci Website..???

3)where are the O-rings and how would I change them..??

4)it is a black liquid and i'll have to check the drian/fill screws...I have had fishing line behind the prop but that was a long time ago.

thanks for your help.

2) You mean the plastic pawl? The nylon thing that engages the flywheel? I belive that one is still available from the dealer (P/N 203698) or aftermarket from Iboats,... oh hang on, Ontario - forget NAPA. Try themarinedoctor.com or marinemanifold.com for aftermarket replacement pawl 18-6513.

The o-rings are inside the female (fuel line) connector. PN 301824 from the dealer (aftermarket 18-7111). Check out alcan's method for replacing them:

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=024654

4; sounds like unburnt fuel/oil to me. Forgettaboutit - all 2 strokes do that. But you should be changing your lower unit oil at least yearly. If the lower unit oil is coming out coffee-with-cream colour (or worse!) you have a seal issue.

Re: 5 1/2 Johnson

AOMCI is Antique Outboard Motor Club, if you have problems finding parts you can find out something there.

Next old motor I get is gonna be a Johnson or 'Rude, seems that parts are a hell of a lot easier to get. I have an old '49 Merc that parts are harder to come across for.

Ditto what Paul said about #4

2) The part on my motor that holds the pull cord is metal and it attaches with 3 screws and when pulled there are teeth that swing out by springs that attach to a part on the fly wheel and turn the fly wheel to start the motor. What would this part be called to search for it????

Thanks for the help and the line to fix the fuel leek I'll be able to fix that easy. As for the leakage it is just a little and the bottom end fluid is changed normally and has not been milky or any thing. It is a really good working motor starts better than my 70HP merc. Just keep having problems with the pull cord and I lost all the springs and don’t' know where to find new ones and I think the part is kind of warn that is why it keeps falling apart that is why I am hoping to find a hole new part.

Re: 5 1/2 Johnson

The believe the parts you want are the pawl's, and pawl springs. I may have those, I'll look when I go out to the shop. Does your pull rope have a wire core, with a metal hook on the rewind end?

Re: 5 1/2 Johnson

Yeah, that's where I got mixed up looking for plastic pawls. You need one from the early 50s (previous to '56). The hub, hub bolt, and the big spring that goes between the hub and the "spring carrier" also appear to be missing.
