I have a 5.5 fisherman that is slow to shift and now will die after about 20 seconds. I have replaced plugs wires new gas. It did run good in a bath and no stalls but first trip to the lake had all kinds of problems. I also dont know the year was given it by grandfather who is gone now and its in great condotion. I realy want to rebuild it and enjoy it with my kids. The # is 5524R 01717. If anyone can help and also knows of a parts shop online it would help out a bunch thanks.
Sean

It's a '62.

Is the lower unit free? Unplug the plug wires and turn the prop while in gear, does it turn the engine?

How exactly does it act, the more info the better.

It rotates and spins free. I had it in a tub the night before and ran it and it idled nice and had very little to no smoke. At the lake when I got it started it was slow to rev and under a load at the start it didnt seem to rev up and then never made it past that and would die every 20 seconds or so. I just ordered a shop manual tonight and should be here next week and am looking forward to rebuilding and babing it. Under the cover it looks brand new. :)

Re: 5.5 Fisherman Eninrude shuts down

I replaced the fuel line from the tank to the engine. The femail end at the engine was falling apart in side. Rubber was breaking down and I think that I might have injested some. If so do you think I should rebuild the carb? It also still shuts down after about 20 seconds and then at the end of the running it speeds up and then dies now. I think it is starving for fuel any Ideas? Wish me luck.
Sean
