i recently aquired a 1954 5.5 cd-10 sea horse. i started inspecting it more carefully (i picked it up at an auction) and found that there may be issues with a connecting rod. are there parts still available for this type of repair or will i have to look into finding another engine to salvage parts from? where all can i look to find parts and catalogs/manuals for this outboard? also, is there any what to run the engine if the OE tank isnt available?

Nice motor.

What leads you to believe the connecting rod is shot??

Parts for this are still readily available, most of them right here at iboats.

PM me with your email address and I can help with some literature.

You could either post a wanted ad at aomci.org for an original pressure tank, check fleabay (although they are expensive on there), or you could convert it to run on a fuel pump. All options are fairly easy. I have 30 or so pressure tanks that I have collected over the years. If you wait until I die my wife will give you a great deal on them. :) Here is a link if you decide to go the fuel pump way.

I concur. How do you know there's a con rod issue? That's a) rare and b) hard to determine.

pulled the plugs to check for compression on both cyleders and could see the piston not moving as i turned the flywheel. i'm a mechanic by trade, so out of normal curiosity prior to starting any small engine i check to see how "opperative" it might be.

Oh. That's pretty major. If you're turning the flywheel and one piston is moving and not the other you're gonna have to strip the entire thing down. Or find a used power head (probably a lot easier and cheaper)

well, if it is rare, then what other issues would cause a piston to not cycle when the crank is turned? perhaps i am missing something seeing as how this is indeed my first outboard.

thanks steve, so now my question is how "bad" is it if only the one piston moves? like i said, i suspect issues with a con rod. if the crank and cyl walls look good or simply need a light honing there shouldnt be much trouble correct?

You will really not know how bad it is without taking off the power head. Could be a broken connecting rod, rod bolts, wrist pin, piston, any and all of the above. And the crank may or may not be ruined.

Yeah the only real way to find out what is going on is to open her up. Since you're a mechanic rebuilding this little guy will be a piece of cake. For others I reccomend simpy swapping powerheads as Steve mentioned, quick and easy and cheaper.

You have to pull the powerhead anyways to do the waterpump, so while she is off have a look see. Let us know what you find.

marineengine.com for part numbers and an exploded view. do a search on youtube for a good video of the water pump job.

Where are you from? You can try a salvage yard listed in the FAQs for the connecting rod, Sea Way Marine for the rings. DO you have any pics of your motor? Would love to see what happened.

PM me with your email address, I may be able to help myself.

54 johnson5.JPG54 johnson1.JPGHello,
on this model, remove the powerhead first to gain access to the shift rod coupler, and disconnect it, then the lower unit/gearcase assembly can be un-bolted and removed with drive shaft. Then the water pump housing bolts (4) are removed with housing and seal to expose the impeller, and stainless steel wear plate.
