5.7 Cobra Water Pump Overheat

I"ve got a 88' 5.7 Cobra that I had hauled out for bottom paint.
While in the yard I replaced the lower unit and the impeller.
Took it out and after about 3 min. the temp. guage crept up to 200 then 250.
I also smelled some fresh rubber.
turned around and shut it off and tied it up.
My risers were fairly hot(hotter then normal).
Soooooo..........................
I must have installed impeller wrong?
