I have a '94 volvo penta 5.7 Gi (throttle body injected) engine that is giving me some problems. it starts and runs fine most of the time, but sometimes when I start it, it has a miss and won't accelerate up to plane, it just bogs and smoke starts coming out of the water behind the boat like it's flooded. but if I back off of the throttle and let it idle for a minute or so the miss goes away and it will run fine until I kill it and restart it later. engine has 220 hours on it, replaced fuel filter, checked anti-siphon valve (seems to be free). not sure where to go next. does the computer on this motor store trouble codes so that if I take it in to the shop and it won't act up, they can still tell what the problem was in the past?

Thanks,
Scott

Before you take it in, do a tuneup. Cap, rotor, spark plugs, check the plug wires, etc.
This cures many engines with running problems like that. Also check the electrical connectors on the engine, loose, corroded connections are an EFI marine engines worst problem.
The ECM does store trouble codes, but only on certain items. And usually all they tell you is what the problem isn't more than what the problem is.

most engine grounds sit directly beneath the hatch edge and get soaked, being in a hard to get location on the back of the block they are neglected. include a thermostat in your service.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will check all my electrical connections when I get to the lake Saturday (boat is in storage). One thing I forgot to mention is the tach is jumping around from time to time which backs up the connection theory. One other thing, if I had an injector leaking down into the throttle body, would that also cause it to run rough for 30 seconds or so after starting?
