5.7 GSI running issue

Hi 87 Wellcraft Antigua 5.7 GSI SX-M drive So had her out today and lost engine It would not start while waiting for a tow did some investigation found the wiring harness 10 pin connector at relay box on starboard side is very touchy if I just touch it cuts out fuel pump I was able to get home but the connection is bad. Can I just eliminate connector and splice the wires together? You can buy a part but its just case would still have same week pins and its $80 or should I take connectors apart and try to fix pins?

You can straight wire and not use a connector, but if the motor ever needs to come out, there is going to be an issue. I would fix the connector either by repair of replace

Had a tough time with connector had to cut and gentle as I was wires broke off connecting pins and came out of there respective positions I’m just going to splice together as engine is rebuilt with about 10 hours my problem is wire colors are different on both sides on the engine harness at relay have lt brown with white stripe,dk brown with white stripe, lt brown with white stripe (I think) gray,purple, white with red stripe lt yellow with red stripe,green with yellow stripe, and a red and black that are larger diameter for a total of 10. On other dk yellow with red stripe,lt brown with blue stripe,dk gray,lt gray,lt brown with white stripe,dk brown with white stripe,orange, and red and purple that are larger diameter for a total of 9.Does anyone have a color code schematic for this connection?

Sounds like there is a difference between 87 and newer motor, but it was working before, so if you connect wires from pin 1 thru pin 10 you have it.

Is there a diagram for other side of connector I have one wire off that want to make sure I connect it to the right pin

I would use water proof bullet connectors to do the splices so it is easy to disconnect if you ever need to and they will be water tight

From what I remember
Egnitoin wires
Purple= egnitoin power
red/purple=power source
yellow/red=starting
Black=ground
Those should be the same on both sides unless farmer Joe had done some wiring to your boat


the rest should be all gauges the only way to be sure is open up your instrument cluster and look at the wire colors to each instrument vs each sensor ie grey should be your tack make sure grey is coming out your distributor and grey is going to you tachometer connect grey together. Tan might be your temp on your temp gauge but your temp sensor has blue going to it so connect blue from engine to tan from instrument cluster and just do that for all your sensors/gauges may sound time consuming but it's not it's very easy and the only way to be 100% sure don't quote me on the obove statement that's just from memory witch mine isn't the greatest but I'm sure it's close and they have been using that colour coding on ignitions forever look at your egnition tumbler vs your egnitoin relay/breaker yo be sure

So I have it back together gauges ok no fuel pump or starter is there a fuse somewhere that may have blown have 12 volts on both sides of breaker by fuel pump relay

I think there is a fuse and relay on the motor, but being a 87 not real positive

Also appears my last post didn't show up with the wiring diagram, so will try again

I see the diagram now actually my bad shift lever wasn’t in t neutral position so starter fine just no fuel pump fuses are ok the yellow with red stripe is the wire for fuel relay correct? If so I’ll check that connection again.

Your ecm switches on your fuel relay when you cycle the key do you hear the IAC reset itself? Maybe your ecm is not getting power

No, The Yel/Red is the start circuit. The fuel pump is turned on as cnote mentioned from pin J-9 and a Green/Yellow wire by applying a ground to the relay

I don’t hear anything going to check pin 9 connection

Ya when you turn your key off the computer resets the iac it is a little step motor it's not loud but you should be able to hear it almost like little clicking noises if you don't hear that than your ecm is not getting power to it it might have it's own fuse somewhere or a breaker I'm sure you've checked all your breakers to see if there tripped another thing is your laniard switch on? I think that might kill your fuel pump also your oil pressure switch will kill your fuel pump make sure the connection to that is ok but I don't think it will kill the pump unless the engine is running

There is no laniard switch what color is wire to oil pressure switch will check that also

I'm beginning to think broken wire when I turn key on nothing is happening except for gauges working haven't checked for spark but I think the 2 are related

When you turn your key to the on position that turns on your egnitoin relay witch give power to your computer you should hear it click you might need two people and have one turn the key while you listen you can also feel it if you put a finger on it you don't hear it click check your ignition wiring

red/purple - feeds power to your tumbler
yellow/red - feeds your starter when you turn it over
purple- feeds your gauges and all accessories that are tied to ignition power when turned to on positoin
green/yellow - feeds your engine relay when turned to on position

so if your getting nothing when you turn to on position check your green/yellow connections it will be tied into the same post as your purple wire on your tumbler

if you think all connections are good turn key to on positoin and chech for power at the engine relay if there is power it may be the relay itself

This is a GSI and the oil pressure has no direct connection to the fuel pump. This isn't The GSI but so far as the oil switch its the same

The green/yellow does not go to the key switch, and the ECM applies a ground to this wire, no power
