5.7 Gsi

I have a 2000 5.7 Gsi and am wondering if I should fog the engine from both the spark plugs and the throttle body? I am thinking that the thru the spark plugs is good but not the throttle body.

Im presuming your Gsi is Fuel Injected. My manual suggests for the 5.7GSI (Volvo). Mix 5 gallons of fuel with 4 pints of Fogging Oil and 1/3 cup of marine fuel stabilizer in an six gallon fuel tank . Then run the engine from this mix for 5 minutes at 1500 rpm. <br /><br />if its carbed I just pour 2/3 through the carb while running and then pour the last 1/3 quickly until the engine dies.<br /><br />Regards<br /><br />Chris

With the Throttle body injection, you can put fogging oil into it just like a carb. <br />If you use the liquid fogging oil, (Not the pressureized spray cans) when putting it into the throttle body, let the engine smoke a lot and you shouldn't need to pull the plugs and put any in the cylinders.<br />I use a bottle like that shown below for fogging carb and TBI engines.<br /><br />

Some of the newer intake manifolds can allow the fogging oil to form in a “puddle” and it will not be pulled into the cylinders until RPM’s are high enough. This can cause a “hydro lock” and result in engine damage. This is one of the reasons why the manufactures have changed the fogging procedures.

Muc, do you know if that is true on the 2000 5.7 Gsi?. If not a problem Don's idea sounds the best

I've been doing the TBI's like that for years with no problem and have never heard of puddles causing hydro locks. And Volvo and Mercruiser would warn of this if it were a problem, and I have never heard anything about it being a problem.

Don<br /> on the 7.4 MPI volvos puddling is a problem. never saw a bulliten about it but I have seen the puddles in real life.<br /> since merc came out with thier fogging bullitin several years ago I just started doing all the EFI motors the same way. most use the same or similar parts:) :) ,and I usually have a lot of fogging mix to use :) .<br /> thats the beauty of this. it all has to work about the same or it dont work at all :) <br />the puddle problem is restricted to the 2 piece intake manifold.

And I agree, the 7.4MPI Volvo's might puddle, but in this thread we are talking about a 5.7L TBI. not a 7.4MPI. Which doens't have a problem. <br />So, why do people have to bring things up that have nothing to do with the question at hand.

If you are a pro, mix up the 5 gallons and use it on several boats. If you are a backyard DIY'er, mix up about 1/2 to 3/4 gallon at the same ratio. I have found that to be adequate for one boat. <br /><br />10:1 gas:eek:il with the appropriate amount of stabilizer.<br /><br />What is also handy for the DIY'er is to use exactly half a pint of a pint container of 2-stroke oil with 6/10ths of a gallon of gas. That way one pint will stretch to two years worth of stabilizing.<br /><br />Pour what's left of the gas/oil mixture into your power toys or the boat gas tank.

merc recently started recommending 10:1 two stroke mix with the relevant amount of stabilizer added for their fuel injected models. and yes only mix what you need to run your engine for 15 or 20 minutes. if your plugs are fairly accessible it never hurts to squirt some into the cylinders.
