5.7 L starter won't turn engine over

Hi all,

Have a 2001 Sunsport with the Indmar 5.7 L. Tried to start it up for the first time this weekend, when I turn the key I get a clunk, and then another clunk when I release the key. All of the wiring connections are good, and I can turn the engine over with a pry bar. It sound like the starter is coming out and hitting the flywheel, but not spinning. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Gave it a few complete revolutions. Also tried to start it with all the plugs out. Starter did the same thing. Clunked, but didn't spin.

sounds like the starter got wet and is now seized. drain plug left in, debris clogged drain hole,

Sounds like the starter is bad. Most auto parts places can test it for you.

Was not aware of this. I'll probably pull the starter and see if I can get it tested, but where is this drain plug?

Bt Doctur is saying maybe the drain plug for the bilge was left in and water filled bilge to starter.......now starter bendix is seized from rust.........

Ah, okay, read that incorrectly. Not sure what happened prior to me getting the boat (it was a repo) but the plugs were out when I picked it up.

Did you happen to ask them why the plugs were out? Sounds to me like they had a major water issue. Boat wasn't sunk was it?

Picked it up in the winter. It was on a trailer and had been winterized before they repoed it. Everything else in the boat seems to work okay as far as electronics and it doesn't look like it was sunk.

Could be just a bad starter......

More likely your battery connections or solenoid. Clean both ends of the battery cables and tighten well. If you still have the problem, check that you are getting 12+ volts on the cable attached to the starter when someone turns the key to crank. If not 12+ volts, replace the solenoid or take it apart and clean the contacts. They get a bit of carbon on them and then setting for the winter just can't get enough amps through them.

You are talking about the cable that goes from the solenoid to the starter, correct?

Bypassed the solenoid and the boat fired right up. Very happy. Is it possible to purchase just the solenoid? It'd be sweet if I didn't have to buy the entire starter.

cant bypass the solenoid on the starter and have the starter work. the solenoid is what pushes the bendix drive into the flywheel.
explain "bypass the solenoid"

Had the key turned and then connected the stud on the solenoid that is always hot to the side that goes to the starter. When I just turn the key, the bendix will come out, but it won't spin.

Re: 5.7 L starter won't turn engine over

the starter contacts are inside the solenoid, you jump the solenoid from the battery lug to the small lug closest to the motor.
solenoid pulls bendix into ring gear and closes contacts for starter motor. the ign key has no relation to jumping the starter
Are you sure its not the slave solenoid you hear clicking?

"Had the key turned and then connected the stud on the solenoid that is always hot to the side that goes to the starter."

That sounds like the slave (5) because the starter solenoid only has a battery cable always hot.

Hmm, not sure. I don't know the starter/ignition system that well. Trying to look at the diagram. So what happened when I started was I turned the key to run, connected to two large terminals on the solenoid and it spun the engine. I stopped after a few seconds and connected the two terminals again. This time the starter just spun, so the bendix must have retracted.

I went to the key and tried turning it to start a few times, got the same thing as before where it would just clunk. So then I tried connecting the two large terminals on the solenoid again and it cranked the engine and started. The bendix retracted when I stopped jumping the two terminals.
