OK ,now were on the same page. you hot wired just the starter motor jumping those 2 lugs. You need to jumper from the top lug to the small lug on the right in the pic. That should pull the solenoid in and cause the starter to spin.
clunk with no spin is bad solenoind contacts. The solenoid is replacable by itself.

Good to know! Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it. Is the solenoid a marine specific part like the starter, or is an automotive part the same? I called NAPA and they said they could get me a solenoid, but I just want to make sure before I do it.

Hooray for new issues...replaced the starter solenoid. Now the engine cranks, but it won't fire on any of the cylinders. Can the starter solenoid affect spark? I have a large suspicion that if I put the old solenoid back on, I could get it to fire.

You probably have to reset the timing. It won't start because maybe the Distributor is out of phase?

starting circuit has nothing to do with spark. You need 12v at the purple wire at the ign switch first, then go to the coil and check the purple wire there for 12v.
A quick engine test is to run a jumper from the batt+ to the + side of the coil. motor should run with the jumper. You have to remove the jumper to shut the engine off.

MIk, even having the dist out of position ,spark still will occur just not at the right time. He`s saying no spark.

I lied, it was not spark. I could smell fuel, so I didn't think that was the problem. It was getting fuel, just not enough. I must have stirred a bunch of junk up when I filled the gas tank.

Thank you for the ideas. I checked the purple wire and had 12 volts, so my first thought was what else have I done since the last time it ran. I had filled it with gas.

Have you flipped the run switch to off on or near the console or the shifter ? Is this engine fuel injected? Does it have two spray like nozzles on top of what looks like a carb. Pull your water fuel separator filter and pour the fuel in it into a clear glass and let settle and see if you have water and or trash in the sample. Also make sure boat is out of gear, neutral. If shifter is slightly in gear the engine should not do anything. Not sure if you mentioned it was spinning over or not. Alway connect water muffs to outdrive for any amount of run time. I would also not place in gear on muffs but only to test forward and reverse engagement for just a brief minute. Placing the shifter in throttle only is done by pushing in on the shifter allowing the motor to rev. I wouldn't rev much more then 1500, 2000 rpms on muffs either. Water muffs do not provide enough water pressure and flow to handle much more than idle speeds.

Hey Doc, I know that, but when he said he had gotten the boat with the plugs out, I figured maybe someone messed with the timing? But, later on I saw he had it running for a few minutes,,, I figure I spoke too soon.
