Hi guys,
I have been lurking this forum since I have acquired a 1983 Bayliner Cobra with a 5.7 Mercruiser engine and if I?m not mistaken an Alpha1 outdrive. I never needed to ask any questions since I?m ?Kinda? mechanically inclined and everything I have read is pretty straight forward. Here is my dilemma I got this boat from a friend of mine, ?who got tired of throwing his money away?. When I got the boat it was overheating, after blowing a valve! I realized the water was not going up to the engine. I replaced the Impeller ($50) with this forums help. I also got the heads rebuilt ($450). Took it back to the water after the replacements and the engine shuts off after 10 min! I tried turning on the engine and it would turn over a few times before the battery died.
So A new battery ($100) a new starter ($120) and a new carburetor ($270) oil change and filter ($50) Spark plugs and wire change ($100) rotor, cap and ign coil ($70) later I take the boat back out to the water and as I?m reversing and change the shift back to neutral the engine stalls AGAIN! So I turn it back on and to my surprise it fires right up. So I?m going down the lake (Weeee!!!) 35 mph 5 min in to no prob and I decided to go a bit further down the lake after 10 min it stalls!!!!!!! I tried turning it on but to no avail. So had to get a tow back to port? (How embarrassing hehehe)
Someone please help what I thought was a blessing is now turning into a curse. I have possibly switched everything in the ?car? section of the boat and I?m unsure what to do next. I have some suspicion the lower shift cable or possibly the interrupter switch might have something to do with it. If it is would it be necessary to take it to the dreaded techs or could I do this myself?
