I have an 88 5.7L 260 hp alpha one gen one
over the winter i put in a new outdrive, new bellows new thermostate and a used thermostate houseing. took it out for the first time ran at 4300 rpm 42mph @ wot and 200+ on the temp gauge slowed down to 1200rpm temp came down to 160.
sitting in the slip it creeps to overheat at 650 idle but if i up the rpms to 1000-1200 it holdes 160 i took out the manifold drain cocks and riser bleed screws and water is pumping out of all four. i was told to take the used thermostate houseing back off and stretch the springs behind the balls that they sometimes lose tention ... also should i pull the drain cocks on the block to see if there getting water

Re: 5.7 over heating

I had a similar problem with my engine a few days ago. How hot are the risers getting? You say that you got a flow, well it could possibly just be an insufficient flow (weak impellar in stern pump, partially clogged risers, leaking or obstructed hose, etc...). You might want to take the thermostat out and test it. My risers had water flowing through them but not enough so I took them off, cleaned them with some muriatic acid overnight and had excellent flow the next day and no overheat. Hope you catch the problem, good luck.
