Any way you can back the boat down into the water and run it and see if you still have the problem? The plumbing looks fine, thanks for the pics.

Re: 5.7 prealpha running hot (pics posted) UPDATE!!!!

Heres an update. I pulled off the manifold in question and here is what I found. I plumbed the garden hose into the bottom of the manifold. With the riser still mounted to the manifold. Water flows great through the manifold and out the riser inlet with just a trickle out around the exhaust outlet. When i close the riser inlet the water comes out around about half of the exhaust outlet. And also when I put my hand over the riser inlet it seems to have alot of back pressure. like when you put your thumb over the end of the garden hose. Seems to be a bad casting blockage around the exhaust outlet.

What do you guys think?

Also I spoke with GLM tech today and he said they havent been having any problems with merc manifolds and risers lately but that they would replace them if they are faulty.

Ok, so just for craps and giggles, I checked the other manifold the same way as the suspected bad one and there was no back pressure. So im pretty sure that its a bad riser, But would love to hear some other opinions before I ship this thing out.

thanks again for all the help.

When you buy the cheapest, don't expect the best.

Re: 5.7 prealpha running hot (pics posted) UPDATE!!!!

Well, I wouldnt have bought the cheapest if I could afford the best. Im a single working dad of three trying to have fun with my kids, on a low budget, hence my 30 year old boat. I dont expect the best out of anything, even the more expensive stuff. Im sure some of you guys have bought high dollar parts and they were no good or failed way before they should. Im just trying to get opinions from you guys who have been around these things alot longer than I have.

So, Once again, Thank you for all the help so far, I really do appreciate it.

You could swap the risers ans see if the problem goes to the other side.

I didnt even think of that. I will see if i can get a set of gaskets locally and give it a shot before i ship it back.

thank you

Re: 5.7 prealpha running hot (pics posted) UPDATE!!!!

Well, I determined that the riser on the starboard side was causing the problem. Very low water flow throught it. I called glm and they said they havent had any recent complaints about the castings but to send it to them anyways. So I shipped it to them and guess what? Bad casting. I should be recieving the new one in a few days. Glm may be the " cheaper parts " people but some of the nicest customer service people ive had to deal with. Hopefully the new riser will take care of this goofy overheat issue.

I agree with Don. I have not heard good things about the GLM stuff. it seems like a crap shoot. You might get some that work, and others that will not. If you are willing to take the gamble, go for it.

Well, I put in a new impeller and housing and now engine seems to be running at 140 degrees. still cant believe the impeller was bad. Everything looked like new. But anyways, all is good now and i am happy.

Since we think you have found your issue i'm going to jump in here with a question on same set up. Why do you have to have the housing that feeds the raw water into the housing on the starboard side with center risers? Mine feeds on the port side after going through the powersteering cooler. I have center risers but the other thermostat housing. I do have to add the check balls though. Is this going to work for me?

Re: 5.7 prealpha running hot (pics posted) UPDATE!!!!

Engines that had log manifolds originally, the raw water hose and power steering cooler are on the starboard side. engines with center riser manifolds have the raw water hose and cooler on the port side. That is why I had to get the t stat conversion housing. My boat is a pre alpha that had log manifolds originally.

Re: 5.7 prealpha running hot (pics posted) UPDATE!!!!

Whats the difference? Why does it matter? It comes out of the transom and up to the therm housing. Port side or starboard side, goes to the same place. Well mine plumbed fine this way i guess i'll find out, unless someone knows what the difference is?

Re: 5.7 prealpha running hot (pics posted) UPDATE!!!!

On mine, the alternator and belt would be in the way of the water hose on the port side. plus the water tube coming out of the transom goes toward the starboard side. i guess they did it that way for a reason.
