hi guys i am looking at a 93 mastercraft with what i belive to be a ford v8 (5.7L) .boat is in mint condition and engine seems likewise however the owner has a piece of rock-wool jammed under the distributer..... reason being that its hard to start when hot and that its a common problem with this type of engine, he reckons that this is an effective cure but i am just wondering if this is true or is he hiding a potential problem, as usuall guys any help is appreciated Thanks..

Re: 5.7 v8 mastercraft

I'm not much help but I wouldn't think of purchasing a used boat without a water test. Bring her up to operating temp, go through WOT a few times, let it idle for a while. Mastercraft is a very good boat and has a superb reputation in my state. My guess is that reputation is not earned by having "common" problems.

Don't buy it without a water test if at all possible. If it is such a sweet deal that you are willing to purchase without a test then you should deduct a percentage from the asking price. Do that and I'll bet the seller will find a body of water in no time and your rock-wool jammed distributor will sing its song.

thanks jojo..have paid a deposit and seller is open to any test so will be giving it a good splash before balance is handed over...he recokns its a common problem with this engine though that has been corrected in later models so will dig a bit deeper..

My BIL has a 1977 351 FORD powered Correct Craft and its great motor BUT you really gotta be creative about finding parts :) compared to a GM powered boat

i would think over were you live that would be and even bigger problem :(

It was repowered 2 years ago and had to go with a remanufactured motor as it is a Reverse Rotation and that makes it even harder

tommays

I have a ford indmar 351 W , Direct Drive in a water ski boat, they are 5.8 L by the way, never needed rock wool to keep mine running or heard of it as a common problem. They are great engines and it will have the velvet direct drive, which is bullet proof and shifts like (velvet!!). and for a 1993 there are load of places that sell parts http://www.skidim.com is good.

ross

thanks ross, your dead rite about the 5.8 wasnt thinking when i put the post up first thanks lol...the engine is totally fine but the seller reckons its just hard to start when hot, i guess he means after alot of use as its not overheating , the rockwool is just throwing me slightly so just being cautious as i dont want someone elses trouble...
