I have a 1992 Celebrity 290 with twin 350's. I started having problems with the starter making an awful noise. Found out there was water in #7 cylinder on the port engine. I figured the motor must have diesiled for a second. No big deal, so I keep having the same problem with the starter so I pull the spark plugs and crank the motor over, small amounts of water consistantly spray out of #7 cylinder. I guess I have a cracked head or head gasket. I don't think it's the block because there's not a whole lot of water.
Anyways I pulled the port engine out to diagnose the problem further. I haven't had time to tear the engine apart because of work. So now for the question.... Last night I was talking to the mechanic at my marina, he was telling me if I just repair leak, since there was water in the motor, it will prolly blow within a month or so. So have any of you had a problem like this? Have you made proper repairs and continue to have life out of your engine? If were a gasket I would replace both sides while I have it out. So what do you think the longivity would be if I repaired it and a compression test checks out okay? I will post updates as I get the engine torn down. Thanks for the help guys.
