5.7L Mech. Fuel Pump Rochester 4BBL Flooding

Evening,
I've read bits and pieces of information on the fuel delivery system on my 1989 Sea Ray 220 DA with 5.7L (350). However, it was flooding trying to start it up. Just for giggles I threw in a new carb kit and cleaned it out and all is well. Didn't find anything out of the ordinary during this process and no gunk.
However, when I reinstalled and tried to start it, it was flooding badly again. I had my wife crank on it (said a small prayer first) and noticed fuel was coming up the clear line from the fuel pump (not the main fuel line). I figured this was some safety line so when the fuel pump fails it pumps excess into the carb.
Am I right in this assumption with my setup? Also, I live in a small town so is a fuel pump available from auto store?
Thanks!

It is bad if fuel is comeing up the tube

You will need to order a marine fuel pump there are many places Like right here that can supply the correct pump if you can not get it local

Would much rather it dump in the intake than the bilge! I'll post the results after replacement. Any preference to which kind I should get?

Got my new fuel pump in today. Took about an hour to swap it out. I pulled the coil and primed the oil pump and then fired it up. There was a short knocking noise when it first fired up and I am attributing it to low oil pressure at start up and/or fuel washed rings from the bad fuel pump dumping in so much gas. This noise went away and haven't heard it since.

I ran the motor for about 1/2 hour and warmed it up really good. Runs like a champ now with no current issues. Though the knocking gave me a scare for a few seconds. And to be honest, I have no idea what it was or where it went.

My new pump ended up costing around $90.

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Did you check the oil? There is a possibility that the bad fuel pump dumped gas into the crankcase also. It really wouldn't hurt to change it just to be on the safe side.

Just a side note: I changed the oil today and boy was it gas smelling. I've changed oil on many a motor and never had this much gas in it. Whew!
Probably run it a few times and change it again just to be safe!
Thanks
