5.7L Rusty Starter - Shop Says Have To Remove Engine To Replace - True?

My 1997 Chaparral Sunesta 252 has a very rusty starter that is still working. The battery terminal is loose too. I don't want to get stranded somewhere so I asked the shop if they could replace it without removing the engine, because of limited access they said no.

How much time is typical to remove and reinstall a 5.7L Mercruiser hooked to a Bravo III outdrive?

This may or may not apply to your particular boat, but it appears that it can be done with the engine in the boat - just a pain in the rear.

Might want to call another shop for a second opinion or at least try removing it yourself first - especially if the $$$ is correct in the last post

If you can't replace the starter without pulling the motor, don't expect pulling the motor to be any easier. I have pulled engines in 20 minutes, same engine in a different boat with the boat built around the engine, 5 hours to remove, and a lot longer to put back in.

Boat designers don't care that engines need fixed.

whats in the way of the starter removal? the manifolds? maybe remove the manifolds to get easy access to the starter...just a thought....I think this may be cheaper than pulling the motor....unless they cant remove the manifolds without pulling the engine...

You might try taking some pics to post otherwise we have no idea because this is boat specific not engine specific.
