Just completed the re-install of the engine and bell housing of my 1996 351 ford and penta dps drive.
This set up has 2 large o-rings that get compressed on the transom shield to form a seal. A plate on the outside compresses with the tail of the bell housing. The engine is in but not bolted to the stringers yet. The bolts that compress the o-rings are hand snug. I have wiggled and pushed the engine as far back as I think it will go. It looks to be as centered as it can be. The engine mounts were not touched, change, altered in any way. The o-rings have been lubed.

Is this set up self centering in the transom plate?

What are the torque specs for the compression bolts to the tail of the bell housing?

Have read other threads about alignment tools but do not think this applies to this design. If so don't see how it would work.

I have looked to see if there were any threads on the subject but had no luck.

Images show bell housing and transom plate.

Thanks

Re: 5.8 FLPHUR/ DPS drive reinstall

Vinny, your 5.8FLPHUR is probably using a DP-C1 or DP-C2 drive. You will not have the Gimbal system DP-S drive, so there is no Gimbal system, rubber hub coupler or alignment tool to be used.
This is actually one of the last AQ style drives, and one of the best drives.

The original alignment was done at the factory. If the motor mounts were not touched, you should be OK. You can check this by looking at the gap between the three flat areas on the flywheel cover and transom shield. When these three spaces are equal, the flywheel cover and shield are triangulated and aligned.

The forward rubber ring is the one that does the water seal, so you will want this ring to be new. Probably best if both are new. The flywheel cover and shield will be pulled together as the clamping collar is tightened.
Use a silicone spray on the rings. Petroleum grease might damage the rubber.

Yes, this is self centering, but watch the rings. I have seen them pinched.

Notice the jack threads in the clamping collar. Install the SS locking plates so that they cover the jack threads.
Tighten the six bolts equally.

Your PDS is the single bearing style with a pilot nose. This style PDS can be removed from the rear without pulling the engine. I would pull it now and install a new bearing on it.
