5 HP Briggs and Stratton problems

Hello everyone I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into my problem. This past weekend I was out fishing off and on for 3 days, then halfway through the third dayI was heading in and all off a sudden the motor stopped pushing us. It would start right up no problem but when you gave it any throttle it would just rev up like the prop wasnt spinning, even in forward and reverse. When I got it in to shore a couple hours later I tried turning the prop by hand and it felt like there were some gears in there that werent catching. once in a while it would catch and you could hear it catch and turn. I was just wondering if there are some gears that would be chewed up so bad they wouldnt catch?

Any help is appreciated.

Also when this happened we were out on the lake in 2-3 foot white caps I dont know if going through these for a long period would cause any trouble with it or what.

I have a 5hp b&s and it will start up with little bit of starting fluid and will stay running but once you cut it off and then go back to start it up it wont start its like it starts when the engine is cold but once its warmed up there is no starting it back up until it is a cold motor again does anybody have any clue how to solve this problem

hmmm I know mine kinda idles high. Such as the slowest it will push my 12ft boat is 3.3 to 3.5 mph!!! But for how I fish/troll that's prefect! If I adjust the idle screw it won't stay running very long once in gear.... which kinda sucks. But I am affraid that at somepoint that cuz its at such a high idle that it will mess up the lower unit gears! If yours runs like mine, it just might have! Other than that, I havnt had any problems with it, other than its just noisy too!! haha.

BTW Can either of you tell me the socket size to the spark plugs?

Bigcountry88, I have the same problem with mine. It's an older model Briggs, that has the kill switch on the cowling, not on the handle. I was told by the Briggs people that the neutral switch might be out of adjustment. When I tried to adjust the switch, there was hardly any adjustment. The way I stop the motor is, I turn the throttle down, then put the motor in neutral, then hit the kill switch. Like yours, it won't start back up. Very frustrating. I believe that the kill switch is stuck. I could let the motor sit all winter, and it always starts up on one or two pulls. But when out on the lake, with a warm motor, forget it. I have gotten blisters on my hand from pulling the starter, not from rowing back. Not sure what the problem is, but next time out, I won't use the kill switch, maybe try choking the motor. I like the motor when it runs, but not when it won't start.

Brim_Buster, really? I have posted on here before with my problem, but this was the first time I found someone who has the same issues that I have. Not really trying to do any High Jacking.

NewBoater_25, my apologies to you for high jacking your thread. To answer your question, there may be an adjustment in the shift linkage in the lower unit. The Briggs people did tell me that there is an adjustment for the neutral switch there. Maybe something came loose and keeps jumping out of gear.
