I was given a 5 hp clinton/ forward/neutral shift that runs great but will not go into neutral. I have pulled the powerhead off and determined the spring inside the clutch is broken. Can this spring be replaced, or where might one find a clutch? Thanks for your help.

Probably not....

Probably not....

Do you have a lathe? The clutch might be repaired, but if you can find a replacement it will be MUCH easier.....I was unsucessful in fixing mine.

I went through this about 2 months ago....

I bought a 7hp k700 and alas no neutral. The tang on the clutch spring had broken off allowing the outer sleeve to spin freely without forcing the spring open to disengage from the motor output shaft.

I removed the clutch and studied it. The clutch is made from an upper piece, a lower piece, the spring and an outer sleeve. The unit is held together with a rivet. There is a bronze flanged bushing under the rivet head in the lower piece behind the spline. The spline piece is pressed into the lower end. I drilled out the rivet, but could not get the spline out of the lower piece to get the rivet head out. The head of the original rivet is larger than the spline openning. So I bashed the old rivet head out of the lower piece with a drift and hammer. I bent a new tang on the spring and made a new rivet to stake it together. New rivet head was .370" to fit between the splines.

I put it back together and tank tested it. Worked fine. I took it for a spin and had an awful noise in about 100 yards and then no forward motion. Paddle. Paddle... Took it back apart and my rivet had given way allowing the upper and lower parts to separate and the spring to wind up between them and break.

I bought one on ebay for 25 bucks from red_weasel. I would suggest you look for any sellers that have eska/clinton parts for sale and email them to see if they have the clutch. No one has the clutch for sale right now on ebay, but I see a bunch of powerheads from various sellers. None of those pics show the clutch so you might get lucky if you email. Otherwise you are stuck in forward.

Good luck!
