i have a 1950's hiawatha 5hp and the motor is like pausing "missing" i think. but i runs fine .. then it misses??what is this?? i cleaned the carb reaaly good. ran it int the test tanks it still did it. i changes the plugs and ignition parts. i ran it once in salt water. and also should i change my impeller? there is a little metal curved tub sticking out from the bottom of the power ehad.. that when im running it.. some kind of oil comes out of it.. is this the water outlet? down the leg of the motor water comes out like spritzing.. and its kinod warm. thanks

Re: 5 hp hiawatha troubles

Try a compression test, fisher. <br /><br />Occasional misfires are often caused by low compression, wrong or wrongly gapped plugs, wrongly gapped points. Internal arcing in the coils happens if they are cracked.<br /><br />The OMC built 5 and 5.5hp engines of the 50s ran either Champion J4J (now J4C) or J6J (now J6C) plugs. The J4C are better for high speed running and the J6C for trolling. J6J were "standard" before 1957 and J4J after that.<br /><br />Gap for fast running should be .030". If you troll a lot, you might try gapping them at .040".<br /><br />The points in the magneto are gapped at .020"<br /><br />Good luck, and welcome aboard. :)
