If it's conventional ignition, not electronic, the input power side of the coil normally has a resistor wire when in the run position, so that the points don't burn up, hence reduced voltage. Usually when cranking, there's another wire coming from the starter to the coil, that delivers full voltage 12V for starting only (igniton key in start mode)

5VDC at the coil is too low for a convential battery/points/ condenser ignition. It should be more like 7-8VDC. If you have some kind of CDI ignition, you wil need to post the brand and year for assistance.

For a conventional ignition system: when cranking the coil should have +12V on it. Check the grounds, point condition and other connections. Clean the points and regap to factory spec. Jumper the coil from the battery to force it to have +12VDC, and check for spark on the coil "tower". if still no spark, you it is likely the condenser is bad.

Re: 5 v at distributor

i am sorry i dont have points... just black box, coil, and a distributer and I am getting 12 v every where but the wht /green wire on the distributor.. I pulled the plugs today and they are a bit dark but firing... its wierd. I think the spark is to weak to start the engine I am going to pull them all and clean em see what happens.

Hey people, he has a 2002 Crusader....ELECTRONIC IGNITION. You should have 12V on one side of the coil, the other side is comming from the distributor module.

Which ignition system is on it? the GM or the Thunderbolt from your old motor?

Have you checked for spark or is it just not starting making you say it has no fire?

Just for giggles, remmove the 'low voltage' wire from the '-' side of the coil.

pull the coil high tension lead and rig a spark testor, use a jumper wire and ground the '-' coil terminal and observe the spark, good or bad?

If bad barrow a spare coil from the neighborhood mechanic and test again.

If the spark is good, then reconnect the terminal wire and crank the engine and test spark again, good or bad?

Is battery voltage up?

Cranking speed good? (Excess starter drag will reduce voltage available to ignition)

Repost your results

If you ID the thunderbolt there is a step BY step chart in the manual ;) which will save a LOT of guessing
