50:1 or 100:1 ??? NOT a "what does my motor" thread

I know my motor calls for 100:1, but I've read and heard a lot about using 50:1 instead. I don't intend this to be specific to my motor, but just a discussion in general. The thinking evidently is that more than required oil won't hurt an engine, and might benefit an older one.

I did numerous searches here and probably missed some threads, but I didn't find any that address this.
