50:1 -or- 24:1?????

I've been searching and reading things about oil to gas mixture and want to make sure its correct?<br /><br />I have a 58 Johnson Seahorse 18hp. I read that it should be mixed 24:1. But I also read that 50:1. Which is correct? If I have a 6gal tank what would the mixture be for 24:1. Would it be 1qt oil to 6gal of gas.(read that too)<br /><br />Also when I goto the gas station to put gas in the tank is there a trick to doingthis as to not get gas everwhere,(Overflow)??<br /><br />Thank you.<br /><br />-Jay

Run at 24:1. One quart TCW-3 rated outboard oil to six gallons of 87 octane unleaded.<br /><br />Todays oils mix fine regardless of how you do it.

Your engine is a roller bearing engine! it will live just fine on 50-1. One pint of TW-3 to six gallons. DJ! I don't mean to differ, but the roller bearing engines are fine at this mixture. Don't do this with the smaller engines with there bushed rod, and wrist pin bearings.

Have a look at the Oil Mix FAQ in the FAQ forum. I'm pretty sure in 1958 the small end connecting rod bearings were still bronze.

Yup, 1 quart to 6 gallons. <br />Or 40ml per l to me. <br />50:1 is 1 pint to 6 gallons, FYI.<br /><br />I keep an eye on the pump, and shut it off at 25l. Well, at the nearest $1 increment before 25l anyway...

There will be marks on the side of your bottle of oil, follow lable for oil per gal. It will give it to you for one to several gallons. BTW I have a 63 sea king 5hp it runs at 24:1<br />Ray

RJohnson.<br /><br />I think the FD-12 (1958 18HP) had a bushing on the small end of the rods.<br /><br />Either way, OMC said that any engine made before 1964 should use a 24:1 mix, using TC-WX oil (now TC-W3).<br /><br />I consider it bad practice to advise anyone contrary to the manufacturer's requirements.

Dont be worried about absolutely exact mix.I ad 1 qt to a 6 gallon tank whether empty or a gallon left as long as you are at least 24 to one.Never had to decarb or rebuild since the 50s.<br />1950 fastwin 14,1961 fastwin 18, 50:1 on 67 bigtwin 40,65 merc 500,77 merc 500,88 evinrude 50.The 14 and 18 were always driven hard and ignored.

JB: My factory 57, 58, manual shows a roller bearing on the small end. Take a look at your manual, and see what you think. I try to be carefull about the advice I give out.

In 1964, I was working at an OMC repair shop! We asked about the 50-1 mix. They said use it in any roller bearing engine we made. To quote Forrest Gump! " Thats all I have to say about that"

As to filling the tank, don't go full out on the pump, start slow until there is a bit of gas in the bottom, that way, there is less splashback. secondly, when its getting to the top, ease off more on the nozzle, and always put the whole tube in the tank so that it'll shut off 4" from the top. then you can add accordingly. that'll stop the splashing and such...

my clymer manual says mix one quart of johnson or evenrude 50/1 lubricant with each 6 gallons of gasoline this will provide you with the recomended 24:1 mixture I always beleave what clymer says
