50:1 or 25:1?

My son's old Evinrude 25:1 puked so he rented a newer Johnson 50:1. They bought a couple cans and SOME of the 25:1 for the Johnson. Problem is, he isn't sure which cans he diluted or didn't.

Could a person tell by looking at it, in a clear glass maybe? Oil used is Cabela's semi-synthetic, green I think.

Thanks

I think it would be tough to tell. How many gallons we talking here? My solution would probably be to mix the 25:1 gas with 50:1 gas in equal parts. That shouldn't hurt anything (in reality the straight 25:1 probably wouldn't hurt either but why chance it.)

Re: 50:1 or 25:1?

I only have one can with about 3 gallons in it. I was gonna just add 3 gallons and be good. Now, he thinks it is already 50:1 but isn't sure.

Down at his house (Twin Cities) he has a bunch of cans with about 25 gallons and no idea which is which. Darn kids.

This may be crazy but I was thinking of using one of those antifreeze testers, with the little balls in it. Would they float differently with more oil or am I nuts?

If both cans have different oil ratio and not sute which one is which, if deluted or not. Introduce finger and rub against thumb, will feel the oil in more or less proportion. If not deluted at all, fingers will rub inmediately dry. Besides one will produce more smoke than the other if both have been already mixed with oil. Worst scenario, mix both tanks, fill tank with at least 4-5 gal of new gas and add 1 gallon of unknown ratio of already mixed fuel in each future boating trip untill you burn all leftovers.

Happy Boating

24:1 mix would do no harm to an outboard calling for 50:1. A bit more smoke, maybe.

Oiling a 2 stroke outboard is like watering a horse. More than required is harmless, less than required is likely to be fatal.

Agreed, run it. A little more smoke will be your answer. Have extra plugs just in case.

Right you are. I put gas from the two cans in a glass and the tint from the oil is so slight you'd never tell.

I'm gonna top off the suspect can which will make it 40:1 or 65:1 then have him mix it with the 50:1 can.

Thanks guys!

Good to see someone agrees with my ex. :):):)

Not sure how a newer vehicle would handle 25:1 mix, but I def agree with using the fuel for something else (lawn mower, tractor, etc etc).

Mix up new fuel for the outboard.

are sooted ports and stucked piston rings really that harmless?
