50 e-tec

Just got back from a 5 day trip with my new 50 e-tec (tiller).

The motor is very nice--especially when compared to the carb 2 stroke I traded. It is quiet, fuel efficient, hardly smokes, doesn't stall at idle speed and starts in a microsecond.

BUT...the nicest part is the trolling speed: It gets down to 0.9 mph on my '02 18" Alaskan. The old motor would get down to 2mph.

All in all, I like it a lot. It does vibrate a little when at the lowest idle (650 RPM) speed but it's tolerable. Very nice motor.

Thanks for the report Bill, glad you like your new "baby". What prop are you running, and what rpms & speed are you seeing on top end with the Alaskan?

Just curious.

-John

Re: 50 e-tec

Illinois:

I'll check the prop and get back to you. I do know the dealer installed the prop that would help me slow troll and that hurt the top end.

I got it up to 33mph on this last trip. I believe it could do a lot better with a different prop but I was a lot more interested in slow trolling speed. I may get a spare prop that's more for top end. My other motor ('03 Merc 2 stroke) would get me into the high 30s. I even hit 40 one time on a perfect day.

I'll let you know on the prop size.

THX, Trout

Re: 50 e-tec

The prop on my e-tec is 13 3/4 X 15p. As i said earlier, it is a great prop for slow trolling but the top end suffers just a little.

As for the handle, it is normal length (as opposed to the really long handle I've seen on some larger tiller motors). The shifter is at the front of the motor (near where the tiller handle meets the front of the motor). There's a kill switch toward the front of the handle so it's pretty convenient and a starter button on the front of the motor.

Trout
