My dad has a 1964 50 hp mercury outboard. The reverse lock does not engage the horizontal trim shaft pin. Is there an adjustment to the vertical shaft that runs down twoard the skeg? The sahft is spring loaded but in the down position the two hooks on the hoizontal shaft do not engage the trim safft pin.

Re: 50 horse mecury reverse lock?

there should be a cam lock gear on the shift shaft on the LU that engages the hooks if it is off alignment it won't push the rod up to activate the hooks and actually it should lock in N and R and not lock in F.

with the lower unit off and in N the cam lock gear should be just on the edge of where it flattens out so when moved to R counter clockwise it would be more onto the flat part of the cam lock gear and clock wise in F should be on the down hill side of the flat hope that helps

Thanks,
Looking at other posts, sounds like the problem, also past owner has the shift shaft on wrong reverse is forward movement on the shift console.
