Re: 50 hp 1972 johnson, runs for about 10 minutes &conks out, wait 10 min. starts up
OK...here's my update... focussed on the stator now... i did the blow dryer test on the stator... started the engine cold, just to see if it would... and it did... then i put the blowdryer on the stator for around 3-4 minutes. turned the ignition and it started, but immediately (3-4 seconds later) conked out and it wouldn't start after that...so i did the same process...waited a while, 5 minutes or so...started the motor (without heating the stator), started right up, and ran fine. turned off the engine, dryer to the stator, started but conked out after about 3-4 seconds and wouldn't restart... waited 5 minutes and it started right up with no problems. I did this cycle 4 times, same results every time.
THEN i tried to heat the stator while running... couldn't quite get the dryer in close enough, for fear of ripping my hand off, probably a good fear to have. couldn't get it to conk out.
But, clearly after heating the stator, it would start, run briefly and conk out and not restart until a few minutes went by.
Now the big question... does this seem to be a stator replacement issue? my wonder is that IF the stator was heated up, would it have STILL STARTED and THEN conk out. I guess i would have thought it wouldn't start at all...in any event, this newbie novice is damn determined to figure this out .
any thoughts/??
