I recently purchased a boat with a 50hp evinrude engine. I started it yesterday and after it ran for a few minutes a grey material started coming from the center and from behind the prop. It had a consistency like grease. Doe anyone know what this is and why it would be coming out?

that grey material !!!!!
if its a grey sludge then its gearbox oil and water mixture.
this means gearbox seal has broken up or leaking very bad.

undo the gearbox drain screw at the bottom and see if this is the same colour sludgey liquid.

or its a massive amount of limscale coming out,but looks like oil/water to me at first glance.

Can you tell us what 50 HP Evinrude we are looking at here? Model, year.

That looks either like unburnt premix mixing with water at the exhaust, or the results of a decarb.

First thing I would do is assure myself that you have good compression and spark. If you are not firing on a cylinder, you would get the unburnt fuel and oil passing through the exhaust. When it mixes with water it would look like that.

Also, if its an older motor that hasn't been run in a while, it could be some carbon buildup that has been loosened by running the motor, and that, mixed with any unburnt fuel coming out of the cylinder and water at the exhaust would make that sludge.

Take a look at the compression and spark first, determine if you are running on both cylinders.

Next, check your lower unit oil to make sure you're not leaking gear oil into the exhaust somehow.

Re: 50 hp evinrude- material coming from the prop

It is a 1989 pro series that came on a bass tracker. The boat has not been used for two years. I did have it a local repair shop to have the neutral safety switch replaced. While it was there they did a compression check and said it had good compression on both cylinders. What is a decarb? Prior to getting it started I had flooded it. The lanyard clip was not on the safety kill switch and I had primed the motor and tried to start it several times. There was fuel running out of the carburetor. I waited a while then started it after replacing the lanyard clip.
As you can tell, I am new to boating and appreciate the help.

would need to be about 5 to 1 mix.

check that gearbox oil first

Phil,
This is what the gearbox oil looked like. Does this look like water is in it or does it look like oil that just hasn't been changed in a long time?
I left the grey material on the prop yesterday and when I went out this morning it was gone. Does that give any indication as to what it was?

Re: 50 hp evinrude- material coming from the prop

that is oil and water mix by the look of it.
and if leaking out a front gearbox seal will look worse with more water mixing with it.
the oil should look like oil not anything milky or any whitish/cloudy colour in with it.
change the oil and see what happens when you run it for a while.

when you took the oil out did any tiny metal bits/filings come out at all ?

it could be a seal let out a drop ,but now will settle back and hold ok, ive had that happen before.

does the engine smoke a real lot ?

if you've only just got it then maybe the engine was run in some contaminated water / lake ....

. The engine did smoke a lot. There was some small shavings on the end of the vent plug.

put some new oil in the gearbox and check it after an hour or so of running.
make sure you have all the water out before this refilling.
put in a small drop to rinse the box out and then leave over night for everything to drip out.

make sure when re-filling that you fill from the bottom with top hole unscrewed and fully open,
this will stop any air leaks and let it fill to correct level.
