50 hp johnson wont start

i just got a new control box for my 72 Johnson and when i try to start it i get nothing. where should i start to look for my problem?

You get nothing -- as in no clicks, no starter rotation, or the engine turns over but it just won't start.

yes no click or anything else. the battery is good and the parts to the control box look good. the plug color on the control box is the same so it should be compatible.

First, is the control in neutral?

Second, if it is in neutral, begin at the starter solenoid on the motor. Check the voltage at the white wires on the small terminals while turning the key. Should have 12V on one, zero on the other.

If no 12, backtrack up to the control. May have a problem with the neutral safety switch, IF there is one in the control. They don't all have one.

yes it is in neutral. i repasted the starter solenoid last year but i will check it and get back.

Check both halves of the big red connector. It may be one or more pins did not mate and pushed partially out of the connector. Make sure those pins are clean.

the starter solenoid is working and i cant tell if i have a neutral safety switch. big red connector you are talking about is the plug for the control box right?
